From the Sea

My second book, 'From the Sea', is being published in the US in June. It’s part of the Picador Shorts series, 'Oceans, Rivers, and Streams' which features excerpts from ‘classic’ books highlighting humanity’s relationship with bodies of water both large and small, and "engages with an element that is vital to our existence: the world’s water and our complex relation to it and to the creatures that call it home."  It’s an honour to be part of this series of books as the other authors in the project include some of my writing heroes, John McPhee, Marion Nestle, Jonathan Balcombe and Adam Nicolson.

‘From the Sea’ includes chapters from 'Eating to Extinction' as well as new stories of endangered foods from the oceans. And so you’ll get to read about wild Scottish salmon and its tumultuous history; the highly ritualized process of making Japanese shio-katsu; artisanal production of dried mullet roe by the Imraguen in Mauritania; cockle-picking traditions of South Wales; and the fate of the native oyster in Denmark. This is a tour of marine food traditions and a reminder of the impact we’re having not only on marine life but also on the cultures and communities which are tied with them.
